EDITH LOUISA CAVELL (born december 4, 1865 in swardeston near norwich, united kingdom, † october 12, 1915 in brussels)

was a british nurse who worked in belgium and was tried by a german military court

for helping allies flee during the german occupation of belgium in the first

world war - she was sentenced to death and shot. she is revered as a martyr and heroine

in great britain and belgium.
