antique cabinet card photograph with an albumen print mounted on cardboard.
the photo shows an authentic outdoor scene from north africa, titled on the reverse side as marche arabe / benmansour.
it depicts a traditional arabian weekly market souk or tribal gathering in a rural hilly landscape in algeria or morocco during the colonial period. many local people can be seen wearing traditional hooded djellabas and burnus garments alongside pack animals like horses and donkeys.
on the reverse side there is a historic handwritten note in french pencil reading marche arabe / benmansour and a small inventory number 11.
a fine example of late 19th or early 20th century ethnographic and orientalist photography.
