vintage chromolithograph postcard titled "doppelschrauben-schnelldampfer 'deutschland' im hamburger hafen", with technical specifications printed (684 ft length, 67 ft beam, 44 ft draught, 16,000 tons, 33,000 hp, 23 knots). the ss deutschland was a hapag (hamburg-amerika linie) flagship built in 1900, briefly holder of the blue riband for fastest atlantic crossing. shown docked in hamburg harbour with her distinctive four yellow funnels and smoke rising from the foremost stack.
postally used, franked with two german reich 5 pfennig germania stamps, tied by a hamburg cds dated 22 may 1912, addressed to frau witwe müller, unterdorf, sur/winterthur, switzerland.
