rare historical political satire carte de visite cdv from around 1880

depicting a highly detailed anthropomorphic caricature bust of the former french president patrice de mac-mahon looking back at his failed regime the composite portrait is made up of various political figures and events published by the famous milanese satirical magazine lo spirito folletto as part of their galleria fantastica series the image features numerous printed inscriptions including 16 mai referring to the constitutional crisis of 1877 syllabus referencing the papal syllabus of errors sedan for the franco-prussian war defeat the faces profile and cheek are formed by the hidden figures of prime minister broglie and interior minister fourtou who are shown literally holding up and supporting a figure of the monarchie on their heads the collar explicitly features a highly symbolic list of calendar years tracking his planned term including 1877, 1878, 1879 and 1880 as well as the terms reaction siege referring to the proposed state of siege emergency martial law and ordre moral ii denouncing his conservative authoritarian government program a fascinating and scarce piece of european media history and political caricature documentation in very good clean condition with sharp contrast perfect for collectors of 19th century photography political ephemera french third republic history or satirical art
