antique carte de visite (cdv) photograph, oval vignette portrait of a young woman or girl in traditional north african dress. she wears an elaborately wrapped turban style headscarf, with long curled hair falling to both sides, a multi strand necklace, and additional draped chain style jewelry across the chest. soft light coloured garment.
photographed by famin et cie, a photography studio located at 8 rue bab azoun in algiers, algeria. the studio was founded by paul marie famin (born 1853 in redon, france), together with georges ambroise mouthier and etienne sassy, and was active from around 1865 to 1895. famin was awarded a gold medal by the société française de photographie in 1889 and was known for his "scenes et types" images, portraits documenting local algerian dress, customs, and daily life for the european market.
the studio backmark on the reverse reads "famin et cie, alger, 8 rue bab azoun."
