original albumen print cabinet card photo - no reprint!
original antique cabinet card, a mounted albumen print, showing the palais longchamp in marseille, france, a monumental architectural complex completed in 1869 to celebrate the arrival of water to the city via canal from the durance river.
the image shows a wide frontal view of the palace with its central triumphal arch and colonnades, flanked by two symmetrical wings housing what are today the musee des beaux arts and the natural history museum, the grand fountain by sculptor jules cavelier in the foreground, and the formal gardens with curving paths in front.
the reverse bears a printed paper label reading "palais longchamp (marseille.)" but no photographer's name or studio mark.
since the palace was completed in 1869, the photograph must postdate that year, the cabinet card format and mount style suggest a date in the 1870s to 1890s.
no photographer attribution beyond the title label.
overall condition is good for its age, with light foxing and surface spotting typical of period albumen prints, no tears or major damage, image is clear with good architectural detail.
size: ~ 16.4 x 10.7 cm (1 cm ~ 0.39 inch)
