original vintage postcard - no reprint!
antique french postcard, circa 1905-1910, showing the corner shop of "établissement j. vanni" at 4, rue de l'hôtel-de-ville et 19, rue des marchands, toulon (var), france. the shop was a "fabrique de bijouterie" and "horlogerie" (jewellery manufacturer and watchmaker/clockmaker), advertising the purchase of gold, silver, and diamonds as well as jewellery exchange and diamond setting services.
a striking feature of the image is the large ornate corner clock mounted above the shop entrance, a typical advertising fixture for watchmakers and jewellers of the period. the shopfront is fully glazed with jewellery displays visible in the windows, and a man, likely the proprietor or an employee, stands in the doorway. the postcard is credited "cliché j. félix" in the upper corner, presumably the photographer/publisher.
the reverse is the standard french divided-back "carte postale" format, in use from around 1904 onwards. the card was never mailed (no stamp or postmark), however the reverse has been pencil-doodled on at some point, likely by a child - includes handwriting practice and a simple sketch of a boat, please see photos for full condition details
a charming piece of french belle époque commercial/shop-front photography, of interest to collectors of toulon and var regional history, jewellers and clockmakers, and french topographical postcards.
