Region of Origin: Apia, German Samoa (Deutsch-Samoa)

Photographic Process: Authentic loose turn-of-the-century silver-based print on characteristically thin paper (Collodion or Gelatin Printing-Out Paper).
Historical Significance, Context & Provenance: This is an exceptionally rare, museum-quality ethnographic document from the early period of the German colonial administration in Samoa. The historic handwritten pencil inscription on the reverse side explicitly reads: "SMS Hansa / Samoa / 1904". SMS Hansa was a prominent Victoria Louise-class protected cruiser of the Imperial German Navy (Kaiserliche Marine) that visited the German protectorate of Samoa during its foreign service tour in 1904. This photograph was acquired directly by a crew member or contemporary naval officer of the vessel, providing flawless, unvarnished historical provenance. The image itself is an iconic studio portrait capturing a young Samoan woman in traditional attire, featuring a highly detailed anthropological study of indigenous culture. She is depicted with a classic elaborate hairstyle, wearing a traditional ceremonial necklace (Ula) and a woven fiber Lavalava skirt.
Condition Report: Image Surface: Excellent, crisp preservation with rich tones, strong contrast, and exceptional facial details.
Paper: Printed on the original, historically thin vintage paper and is notably unmounted (not glued to cardboard). As typical for loose prints of this era, it shows natural light curling.
Flaws: Minimal handling wear consistent with an archival document over 120 years old. Under close inspection, the paper shows authentic characteristics of its age and historic photographic chemistry, featuring a beautifully preserved glossy emulsion layer. Contains no modern pen marks, tears, or alterations to the photo surface.
