titled 3980 taking an afternoon nap on the hard pillows of the japanese.

this card belongs to the edition de luxe series patented april 14 1903.

the stereograph captures an intimate indoor scene in japan during the meiji era showing three japanese women or geishas resting on tatami mats. they are using traditional wooden neck rests takamakura to protect their elaborate hairstyles while sleeping. the traditional interior features shoji screens tatami mats and a painted hanging scroll kakemono in the background.

mounted on the original dark gray curved cardboard stereoscope mount.

an excellent historical collectible for enthusiasts of japanese culture meiji era geisha history and early asian ethnographic photography.
