historic black and white photo postcard from the first world war, capturing military positions at the infamous hartmannsweilerkopf (vieil armand) in the vosges mountains, alsace.
the scene depicts a heavily fortified hillside camp with wooden bunkers, dugouts, and stairs leading up the steep terrain. a large group of german soldiers is gathered on a terraced platform in the background, while a pack mule or donkey stands on a lower stone-walled path in the foreground, highlighting the challenging logistics of mountain warfare. the card features the card number "36" printed in the bottom right corner.
the reverse side is an unused feldpostkarte with a printed heading for "hartmannsweilerkopf". it features the publisher imprint "hans hildenbrand, kriegsphotograph, stuttgart" along the center dividing line.
