the photo shows a portrait of a north african ascetic, likely a marabout or sufi member from the maghreb region morocco, algeria or tunisia.

the person is wearing a traditional hooded garment like a djellaba or burnus.

on the reverse side there is a historic handwritten note in german reading typ mönch which translates to type of a monk.

this is a classic example of late 19th or early 20th century ethnographic photography and orientalism. good vintage condition with age related toning and minor wear as shown in the pictures. perfect for collectors of early orientalist photography and north african history.
