vintage black and white postcard showing a scenic street view of the historical klosterstraße (klosterstasse) in st. avold, lothringen (lorraine), which was part of the german empire at the time. published by metzger and gassisch, st. avold.
the card is written as a military feldpost message from a soldier dated december 31, 1914, who notes being stationed with the 3rd company of the 9th lothringisches infanterie-regiment nr. 173 (3. ers. comp. inf. regt. no. 173). highly interesting text content mentioning his new duty as a clerk and a reference that their regiment is receiving the totenkopf (skull and crossbones) insignia. the writer also complains about intense tooth pain from shrapnel splinters in his right jaw.
the reverse side features a clear circular postal cancellation stamp from neustadt an der haardt dated january 2, 1915. addressed to frau haefelin at maximilianstraße 14 in neustadt haardt.
postally used in 1915
condition: very good...please also refer to scans which show complete front and backside of postcard
